Speaking about carpets, it's necessary to have in mind the carpet shape. A great part of handmade carpets are rectangular, but there are other shapes as the runners, round, oval, square and much more.
Shapes
Rectangular: The more common carpets are Rectangular with a big variety of sizes.
 Runners:Runners are also very common. They are rectangular, very long and straight pieces. Now, in the market the sizes are between 75 to 90 cm width and 180 to 600 cm length and sometimes superior. They are used on stairs covering very frequent in Europe, at halls and corridors. Since 70 years, the runners were used in bedrooms with Persian decoration and in sitting rooms.
Round:In round carpets, width and length are the same as well carpet diameter so, when we look for one round carpet 3x3 it has the diameter of 3 mts. The oldest round carpet found till today is the "Mamluk" dated from the XVII century and made in Egypt with complex geometrical designs. In the last 50 years the round carpets became more popular in Iran and they are woven in Tabriz, Esfahan and Nain. The geometrical motif of round carpets is mainly the medallion.
Oval:The oval carpets are not very usual and its style is from China and French origin being now popular in Iran. It was not established one size standard however these carpets are measured as the rectangular. The bigger diameter is considered the length and the smaller the width.
Square: Square carpets are also considered unusual. As the name states the width is the same as the length.
 Other shapes: Sometimes as it appears carpets can be in hexagonal, octagonal and even triangular carpets shapes.
